On July 9th, 2010 we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect setting to host the 25th Annual Golf Tournament in Memory of Hank Aldrete, ‘55.  Perhaps it was Hank himself, whose passion for spending time on the links was well known, who blessed us with such great weather on a day when friends and family of Cathedral High School gathered at the Pacific Palms Resort to help raise funds for scholarships for current and future students.

The tournament had its humble beginnings in the 60’s and then Hank and fellow graduate Joe Moschetti, ’55, raised the bar in the 80’s by giving it more exposure and increasing the level of competition. As much gratification as one gets from fundraising, it is also satisfying to rekindle old friendly rivalries on the field, albeit, more refined now. Current co-chairperson, Ray Recendez, ’61, is certainly committed to the same level of excellence and keeps improving the experience at the annual tourney by making it challenging for those who play for keeps - holding an individual stroke play and also making it fun for those of us who just enjoy spending a day with friends and use the 4-player scramble format to hone our golfing skills - even if it’s only one time a year.

The highlight of the event always settles around the awards dinner after the games have ended. You can feel the camaraderie and genuine excitement fill the room where you hear stories about the longest drive or the “oh, so close” putts that never materialized. Several bastions of the community, like Southern California Edison, attend and more importantly support our cause with their financial help, however, more apparent at times like these is the moral commitment to make Cathedral High School a haven for those young men coming up the ranks and perhaps set an example for them to follow in our footsteps.

The Golf Tournament is only a cog in the Alumni Association’s fundraising machine built to ensure current and future Phantoms get a great education and make a positive difference in their life.  The Cathedral High School Alumni Association invites you to get involved, help create new memories and carry on the Phantom Brotherhood legacy.
