2010 Alumni
Basketball Tournament Champions - Division II - Grave
Diggers
For the first
time in the brief history of the Alumni Basketball
Tournament, a team comprised of all 70’s players ‘Purple
Haze’ beat an 80’s team ‘Damage Inc’ in the Division I
Championship game 45-43. In the Division II
Championship game the 90’s ‘Grave Diggers’ beat the 80s
‘Los Chamucos’ 48-34.
The 3rd
Annual Tournament was held over two weekends in January
2010, 16 teams with 150 players contended for 4 bracket
championships and 2 division championships. Many
exciting games were played including four overtime
games, which included the alumni faculty team losing a
nail biter. The tournament was a double round
elimination that consisted of sixteen (16) teams divided
into 4 divisions: Division IA: comprised mostly of the
70’s alumni; Division IB –comprised of the ‘80s alumni;
Division IIA – late ‘80s and ‘90s alumni; and Division
IIB – late ‘90s through 2009 alumni.
Division I Championship Game
The division I
championship game matched two teams, the 70’s “Purple
Haze” and the 80’s “Damage Inc.”. Damage Inc. led early
in the contest with the hot shooting of Rudy Jimenez ‘88
who made three 3-pointers and the rebounding of Ernie
Quinter ‘88. Damage Inc led 13 - 2 after seven minutes
of play. During that period “Purple Haze” had numerous
turnovers and was ice cold with their outside shooting.
The great
outside shooting continued for Damage Inc. the half
ended with 3-pointers by Francis Fong ‘88 and Javier
Lopez ‘88 along with the inside scoring of Quientero who
had 10 points in the first half. But “Purple Haze” came
back in the last 6 minutes of the first half with the
shooting of Vince Valenzuela ‘79, Jimmy Quintero ‘74,
and Efrain de la Peza ‘73 to close the gap at half time
31 to 19.
“Purple Haze” like the song from Jimi Hendrix came out
blazing with two straight outside jumpers from Danny
Delgado ‘71 and one from De La Peza to cut the led to
31-26. By the 8-minute mark the score was 40 to 30 in
favor of Damage Inc. From that point on Damage Inc. went
“stone” cold. With less than one minute to play Purple
Haze was behind 42 - 40, then De La Peza was fouled
attempting a three point shot, and made three free
throws in the final seconds to take the lead 43 – 42.
Purple Haze led for the first time in the game. With
less than 10 seconds left on the clock, Delgado was
fouled and made two free throws to seal the victory.
The final score was 45 – 43, Purple Haze.
Division II Championship Game
The Division II
championship game matched last year’s finalist “Los
Chamucos” and the 2007 Champs the “Grave Diggers” who
had not lost a game in the tournament. Los Chamucos
included two great players from the 88 playoff team,
Javier Montenegro and Eslander Williams. The Grave
Diggers included Luis Leal and Danny Lopez from the 96
CIF runners up championship team.
The first half
was a slow moving game due to the poor shooting from
both teams. Eleven minutes into the game the Grave
Diggers lead 14 to 6 with the inside scoring of Julian
Nava ’99. Los Chamucos came within two points 17 -15
with 2 minutes to play in the half, the closest Los
Chamucos got in the game as the Grave Diggers lead 20 –
15 at half time.
The second half
the Grave Diggers broke the game wide open with great
ball handling and fast breaks from Leal ‘96 and Lopez
’97 who dished off to Nava and Philip Sanchez ’04 for
7 assists
between them. After 7 minutes into the half, the Grave
Diggers lead by 16 points. The Grave Diggers were lead
by Nava who had 8 points in the second half along with
Sanchez who also score 8 points. The leading scorer’s
for the Grave Diggers were Julian Nava with 14 and Luis
Leal with 13. The final score was 48 – 34.
3-Point Contest
Over 30 alumni
of all ages participated in the 3–point contest between
the two championship games including last year’s winner
Ron Valdez ’64. After the first round, the finalists
were Paul Villa ’81, Danny Lopez ’97 and Luis Leal ’96.
Luis Leal won the contest by making 8 baskets out of 10,
coming in a close second was Lopez followed by Villa.
Thanks to all
the alumni who participated in this year’s tournament.
