For the fifth straight year the “Alumni Gala” was sold out! For the second year the Gala was held at the Rose Bowl’s “Court of Champions”. It was a perfect setting; the courtyard gave the event an elegant and intimate atmosphere.

The evening began with a tribute to Manuel “Pops” Palacio for his 50 years of service to Cathedral students. One of the highlights of the evening was the introduction of the Cathedral CIF State Champion Track Team. Congratulations to them on their great accomplishment.

The party continued with the performance of Sangria, who played three sets of dance music, while DJ Phil of the class of ’84 kept the dance floor full during band breaks. The eight-piece Sangria band is one of the premiere dance bands in Southern California and that night they proved it!

The Gala awards were given to Kevin Colin ’79 who traveled the furthest from Maryland to attend his reunion. To the eldest alumnus present was Thomas Castro ’51, and to the youngest alumnus present was Daniel Salazar class of 2005. The Phantom Brother award went to the five Medina brothers: Jerry ‘55, Raul ‘58, Alfred ’62 and Chris ‘68 for the most brothers present.

The upset of the evening was the class of ‘99 winning the Victor Balzano Gala Class Spirit award. The was given to the class with the most classmates present and beating out the class of “67 by a slim margin. The class of “67 have won the Balzano award 6 times in the 8 year history of the Gala. The evening ended with acknowledging the reunion classes of ‘54, ‘64, ‘69, ‘74, ‘79, ‘84, ‘89, ‘94, ‘99 and a special recognition to the class of ‘59 who celebrated their 50th year reunion and all phantoms present rushed the dance floor to sing the Alma Mater.

The Alumni Association would like to thank all the alumni, their families and friends for attending another successful event. All profits from this event will be distributed to the student financial aid programs.
